Salang Corridor — Biodiversity Baseline Assessment

Biodiversity baseline work for SMEC International on the Salang Corridor, covering flora, fauna, habitats, potential impacts and mitigation recommendations.

Salang Corridor — Biodiversity Baseline Assessment
Project Overview

Supporting safe, compliant health infrastructure

Daira Sabz Consulting and Engineering Group provided environmental monitoring services under a structured sub-consultancy assignment with an international engineering partner.

The project aimed to support safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible infrastructure by conducting field-based environmental measurements, laboratory testing, compliance analysis, and technical reporting.

Across multiple phases, Daira Sabz carried out monitoring covering key environmental parameters such as ambient air quality, noise levels, drinking water quality, surface water quality, and laboratory-based environmental testing.

Scope of Services

Biodiversity baseline survey scope

Daira Sabz delivered field-based measurement, laboratory analysis, and technical reporting across five core monitoring streams.

Ambient Air Quality Monitoring

Monitoring of key air quality indicators, including:

PM2.5 PM10 Total Suspended Particles — TSP Sulfur dioxide — SO₂ Nitrogen dioxide — NO₂ Carbon monoxide — CO Ozone — O₃

Noise Level Monitoring

Daira Sabz conducted daytime and nighttime noise level measurements using field monitoring equipment to assess environmental noise conditions around project sites.

Drinking Water Quality Analysis

The project included drinking water quality testing for physical, chemical, heavy metal, and microbiological parameters, including:

pH Turbidity Total dissolved solids Chloride, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate Conductivity Heavy metals Total coliform, E. coli, and fecal coliform Taste, odor, color, hardness, and selected minerals

Surface Water Quality Analysis

Daira Sabz also conducted surface water quality analysis for parameters such as:

Temperature Dissolved oxygen Chemical oxygen demand — COD Biochemical oxygen demand — BOD₅ Phosphate Sulfide Heavy metals Microbiological indicators

Laboratory Analysis and Reporting

Laboratory testing was conducted in accordance with relevant NEPA, ASQA, WHO, and US EPA standards. The final reporting package included:

Field monitoring data Laboratory results Standard comparison Compliance evaluation Site-specific findings Corrective recommendations where applicable
Scope of Services

A practical, standards-based process

Daira Sabz used a practical and standards-based environmental monitoring approach:

  1. 01

    Site Mobilization

Deployment of field teams, monitoring equipment, sampling tools, and logistical resources.

  2. 02

    Field Data Collection

On-site measurement of air quality, noise levels, water sampling, and environmental observations.

  3. 03

    Laboratory Testing

Analysis of selected water and environmental parameters using recognized methods and standard references.

  4. 04

    Compliance Assessment

Comparison of monitoring results with applicable national and international environmental standards.

  5. 05

    Technical Reporting

Preparation of environmental monitoring reports with findings, data interpretation, and corrective recommendations.

Key Results

Through this two-phase assignment, Daira Sabz contributed to:

  • Improved environmental compliance for health infrastructure projects
  • Better understanding of air, water, and noise conditions around project facilities
  • Evidence-based reporting for project partners and decision-makers
  • Practical recommendations for corrective environmental measures
  • Strengthened environmental monitoring practice in Afghanistan's health infrastructure sector
