From December 2020 to May 2021, Mustafa Hasani, Daira Sabz’s CEO, contributed as national consultant to the midterm review of “Conservation of Snow Leopards and their Critical Ecosystems in Afghanistan” (PIMS 5844), alongside international consultant Andrew Laurie. This reference represents leadership consultancy experience; WCS implemented the conservation project with UNDP support and GEF financing.
The conservation project aimed to protect snow leopards and their critical ecosystems through a sustainable landscape approach. Its challenges included illegal wildlife trade, human–wildlife conflict, unsustainable grazing and fuelwood collection, land degradation and climate change.
The review examined progress and implementation and developed recommendations. It drew on document review and stakeholder consultation, including interviews in Kabul and remote engagement. No field visit to Wakhan was possible. The report is published in UNDP’s Evaluation Resource Centre.

Wildlife protection: assess and monitor illegal trade, strengthen government capacity to combat it, and assess and mitigate human–snow leopard conflict. Landscape planning: improve ecological knowledge and sustainable land use, reduce unsustainable grazing and fuelwood collection, support conservation-compatible livelihoods, and consider climate-change impacts. Knowledge and learning: promote conservation through education, outreach, awareness raising, monitoring and evaluation. These are the conservation project’s intended outcomes, not claims of achievements by the review team.
